Strengthening Foundational Literacy and Numeracy through Joyful Learning
PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 Balasore is committed in achieving the objectives of the NIPUN Bharat Mission by providing a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy to children at the foundational stage. Various age-appropriate, joyful, activity-based and experiential learning activities are conducted for students of Classes I and II under the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) programme.
Major FLN Activities
Foundational Literacy: Phonics Drills and Matra Practice; Drop Everything and Read (DEAR); Story Telling and Story Circle; Word Wall; Rhyme Time; and regular reading, writing and oral-language activities.
Foundational Numeracy: Number of the Day; Forming Numbers using number cards and concrete materials; Shape Display using Rangometry/Jodo Gyan Kit; Hands-on Mathematics; Math Talk Time; and counting activities connected with real-life situations.
Home-School Connect: Home Reading Programme and home-based numeracy activities encourage parents to reinforce foundational skills beyond the classroom.
Outcomes
The FLN initiatives have created an enthusiastic and child-friendly learning environment. Students are becoming more confident in reading, speaking, vocabulary development, writing and number recognition. Activity-based mathematics has helped children develop number sense, shape recognition, mathematical vocabulary and logical thinking. Regular observation and competency-based assessment help teachers identify learning needs and provide timely support. Active parental participation through home-based activities further strengthens learning.
Through joyful pedagogy, experiential learning, continuous assessment and parental participation, the school is making sustained efforts towards achieving the goals of NIPUN Bharat and ensuring that every child develops the required foundational literacy and numeracy competencies.
